Olifa is the traditional varnish used on icons painted in egg-tempera. Unlike modern varnishes, Olifa retains the beauty and depth of the colors painted in egg-tempera.

Olifa is applied after the icon has dried for many days or weeks. Drying time depends on the level of humidity the icon is subject to.
